Ventimiglia: la porta occidentale d'Italia

The medieval town of Perinaldo lies amidst enchanting and unspoiled countryside. Once called Podium Rainaldji, it overlooks a valley in which the silver of the olive trees, the green of the Mediterranean landscape and the yellow of the flowers of the mimosa trees descend gently until they finally reach the blue of the Mediterranean sea, indisputed symbol of this magnificent strip of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente.
At the back of the town, the high peaks of the Ligurian Alps create a marvellous amphitheatre, which protects from the cold coming from the north and withholds the beneficial currents of the Mediterranean, thus contributing in making the climate of  the Riviera  dei Fiori so famous in Europe.
Located at just a few kilometres from prestigious cities such as Montecarlo, Nice and Sanremo, the town offers both the possibility of enjoying the more unknown parts of Liguria, (the more relaxing and authentic side) and of throwing yourself into the night life of these famous towns.
Built in the XI decade on the remains of an old castle from the Bronze Age, Perinaldo spreads over a hill-top which has breathtaking views. The view is through 360 degrees, reaching heights of over 2.000 meters, gradually moving down the valley to overlook characteristic mediaeval towns of Apricale and Baiardo (the latter being inhabited in the old days by Celtic Druids), and that of Monte Bignone which the Greek historian and Geographer Strabone much enthused about. You can also see Mont Angel, which dominates the Principality of Monaco, finally reaching down to the coast and the blue of the sea.
The historical centre is characterised by a maze of “carrugi” (typical narrow cobbled streets), which create picturesque views and lead you through places of historical interest, whether it be mediaeval, renaissance, or baroque, such as the Convento di San Sebastiano, the Castello Maraldi, the Fontana dei Leoni, the Chiesa di San Nicola da Bari and the Oratorio di San Benedetto. All of this is made even more precious by the enclosing town walls, the elegant patrizie houses,  trecenteschi arch ways, freizes and museums. Just outside the town there are beautiful holy shrines, made even more so by their context amidst the olive groves.
It is precisely these olive groves which produce the extraordinary “molten gold” olive oil from the renowned type of olive, the Taggiasca, which is greatly used in the Ligurian cuisine, poor by origin but unexpectedly tasty to the palate. A world of flavours which can be discovered in the town’s restaurants.
Good cooking therefore, but also a cultural heritage, seeing that some great astrologers and map-makers of the past were born there. The most well known being Gian Domenico Cassini, called by King Luigi XIV to direct the astronomical observatory in Paris and to whom the 1997 NASA mission for the exploration of Saturn was dedicated to, (Cassini Mission).
This vocation for astronomy among the people of Perinaldo can been noticed by the presence of an Astronomical Observatory, open to the public, which allows visitors to appreciate the outstanding beauty of the constellations.
Unfortunately it is impossible to adequately describe how fascinating Perinaldo is to those who have never been there, its unspoiled beauty, historical and cultural interests, wonderful food and superb climate make it an ideal location for relaxing, stimulating and regenerating holidays.
